Open sourcing MEXP - maintainers needed
Hi everyone!
Posting this in the support-forum as I need support I know Mexp is not being maintained anymore and I feel really bad about it! Is you probably know I got tired of Windows a few years ago and switched to Linux completely (you should too!). Not much motivation in developing for Windows then. Also I got a baby doughter last summer - so not much time for developing at all  Instead of keeping mexp outdated I will open source it. There are some problems however. The code in its current state is quite a mess an undocumented. It could really use some cleaning up and commenting. The reason to the code not being so pretty and structured is that Mexp was one of my first attempts at programming However releasing it as open source isn't the solution to all problems - it requires someone to take care of the project. So instead of just releasing the code I would like one or more maintainers to be attached to the project. Mexp is written in Delphi 5 (it's quite old and you can probably buy a copy cheap from ebay). I have not tried compiling it with other versions so I don't know if that's possible. Maintainers should be familiar with this tool. I will be happy tutoring any way possible (though chatrooms etc.) Is anyone interested in this "job"? |

EXCELLENT! Thanks to Anders for open-sourcing the software, and to Peter for taking on the job. I am extremely happy and excited about this.

8O A Miracle! ;-)
Finally MEXP will be open source! Strike! :-) Thanks to Anders for this step and for not letting die this cool piece of software. Still using it with the old WinAMP V2.91 for 5 years now. ;-) Never used any other mp3 manager for my 18000 songs. Thanks to Peter for his engagement! Hope to hear some nice efforts from you soon. Nice greetings to all MEXP-Enthusiasts! Silvaheart |

Thank you Anders, this has been a long awaited move from you. I really appreciate it and am pretty excited thinking about the possibilities. I will definately have a look at the code and although I haven't had any experience with Delphi up to now, I know my way around in C++ and Java.
The speed, the options and features of MEXP and it being a plugin to winamp (which used to be a lot better some time ago...oh well...) are all good reasons to keep MEXP alive and have it updated once in a while. I also second Wurlitzer's request to release the latest beta version. I think Peter's been using it for a long time now and he hasn't complained much about it ![]() Please don't wait another half year or so to release the sources. Decide on a license model and just release the thingy. Did you comment your code in english or in danish, btw :-) ? So long, and again: thanks. Take care, Ben |

How is this for irony...
Thomsen stopped working on MEXP because he switched to Linux... one of the main reasons I DON'T use Linux is MEXP. I know that sounds very weird, but I can't find a single media player in Linux that I really like. XMMS was nice until it died, but I still couldn't find a software for managing all my music in a way I liked (rhythmbox and such kinda suck compared to MEXP, in my opinion). And since music is a big part of why I use the computer... So.. Here's hoping that open source will eventually bring a Linux port as well (maybe standalone). Maybe not, since.. Well, I dunno how portable Delphi would be. I can dream though. |

What's the latest news? Has MEXP development begun again as open-source? Peter, have you begun work?
Man, I'm sure anxious to see some development. Or hear some news! |

As I told ... I'm prepared. Got an original Delphi 5, bought a 27" LCD 1920x1200 to have more fun with programming ... but there's no source.
I have not lost my trust that some day Anders will fulfil his announcement to open source his first child

This post is a very good news for me.
I've been waiting for this since a long time. http://www.mexp.dk/modules.php?name=Foru...opic&t=998 even if I switched to Linux and xmms2 2 years ago. ---- Sorry if my english is bad |

Been a long time since I visited here (doesn't look like I missed much other than this!).
Great news that maybe someday it will be moved to open source. I still hold KMPlayer/Winamp with MEXP are the best combo for music playing in Winblows. I still recommend it. I myself moved over to Linux a few months ago (when I had the time - if I could give advice to anyone who is looking to make the move, be wary of a step learning curve and allow yourself a few months or two to learn the ropes). I'm loving Amarok over here and I hear it will soon be ported to Windows... MEXP might have a contender soon! Anyway, all the best guys. I'll keep praying for ya for a new release  |
